A is for Alice
A is for Alice
A is for Alice introduces children to Alice Paul in a playful and inspiring way, and celebrates her work for women’s suffrage, prison reform, and civil rights. It is filled with the delightful sights and sounds of Alice’s childhood on the family farm. We learn about Alice’s grandmother’s stories of heroes and how she notices Alice’s gumption. We hear how Alice is encouraged in Quaker meetings to be brave and to do what is right. We see Alice’s gumption in parades and in talking with the president about women’s right to vote.
This charming book was written by Rebecca Ragland, a priest at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis, who has shown much gumption in advocating for justice. It is illustrated by Rosie Davila with oil paints and bright, cheerful colors, with inspiration taken from her own family farm and historical photographs.
