From brainstorming nonviolent solutions to conflicts with friends to learning de-escalation skills, the ability to comfortably do a role play on zoom is an essential capacity for us all. Everyone is welcome. No prior experience is needed. This training is also open to everyone, whether you're part of an affinity group, looking to join one, or just curious about virtual role plays!

Campaign Nonviolence Action Week takes place this year from September 19th- 27th, 2020. In a “normal” year there would be no question about taking to the streets for public action, however with the pandemic causing so much uncertainty we thought it might help to get some ideas from other skilled organizers.

Join us on June 18, 2020 on Zoom to hear from Kazu Haga founder and coordinator of the East Point Peace Academy in Oakland, CA. Kazu will talk about his vision of nonviolence and about ideas for actions during this unique time. Kazu will also be joining us for our online Campaign Nonviolence Conference on August 8th!

The call will be held at 4pm Pacific / 5pm Mtn / 6pm Central / 7pm Eastern on Thursday, June 18.

Register via zoom here!

More about Kazu Haga:

Kazu Haga is the founder and coordinator of the East Point Peace Academy, a core member of the Ahimsa collective and the Yet-To-Be-Named Network and author of the book Healing Resistance: A Radically Different Response to Harm. He is an experienced trainer, certified in several methodologies of nonviolence and restorative justice. Having received training from elders including Dr. Bernard Lafayette, Rev. James Lawson and Joanna Macy, he teaches nonviolence, conflict reconciliation, restorative justice, organizing and mindfulness in prisons and jails, high schools and youth groups, and with activist communities around the country.

Kazu was introduced to the work of social change and nonviolence in 1998, when at the age of 17 he participated in the Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage; a 6-month walking journey from Massachusetts to New Orleans to retrace the slave trade. He spent a year studying nonviolence and Buddhism while living in monasteries throughout South Asia, and returned to the US at age 19 to begin a lifelong path in social justice work.

He is the recipient of several awards including the Martin Luther King Jr. award and the Gil Lopez Award for Peacemaking.

He resides in Oakland, CA.

Chenoweth event.jpg

Sponsored by our friends at the East Point Peace Academy, this event features one of our August 2020 Conference keynote speakers, Dr. Erica Chenoweth.

The coronavirus pandemic has devastated communities world-wide, but it has also opened up incredible opportunities for social movements to push for progressive change. However, many of the traditional ways that movements leverage power – protests, demonstrations, mass actions -are not currently available to us. So how have movements been responding?

Join scholar and author Erica Chenoweth as she shares various methods of nonviolent action that have been emerging worldwide in the context of the crisis, and how states have been responding to them. She will also be sharing her discoveries about how the capacity of people power to effect change during these times can also have long-term consequences.
