Session 2

Welcome back!

In our first session we began to explore the longing that led Francis, and later Clare, to undertake a life pilgrimage for transformation and healing. In this session we ruminate on the Call, Preparation and Departure they experienced.

Specifically, we will:

  • Visit San Damiano, Piazza del Vescovado (the Bishop’s Plaza) and Santa Maria Maggiore, and Clare’s House.

  • Group reflections

Here are a couple of readings, if you like:

SAN DAMIANO

After returning from war, Francis spent several years feeling lost. One day, as he wandered, he stepped inside San Damiano, a dilapidated chapel about a mile below Assisi. He had a powerful experience, in which the cross in the sanctuary called him to “rebuild my Church.” Click here to continue.

PIAZZA DEL vescOvado

Francis’ journey of conversion led to the dramatic moment at “The Bishop’s Plaza,” near the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, when he renounced his father’s wealth and committed himself to the way of God. For several years after Collestrada he had been unknowingly preparing for a profoundly new direction in life, and now he had arrived at this definitive departure. Click here to continue.

St clare’s house

Clare di Offreduccio di Favarone was born into an aristocratic family of power, wealth, and military might. Her family was exiled to Perugia in the aftermath of the uprising of the minores (the lesser ones, including the mercantile class) against the maiores (the ruling nobility). Click here to continue.
