Actions from Fargo, Kansas City, Worcester, Eau Claire, and More!
The Campaign Nonviolence Week of Action ended yesterday with over 4000 events, and the details keep coming in. If you have details to share, please send them to us here. Keep an eye on our blog for more details as we share them!
Ann Suellentrop of Kansas City, KS tells us, “There were 45 artists who participated in our first online art fair from 11am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Artists and PeaceWorks board members were interviewed live with a few musical guests performing. Fair-goers could visit with artists in their studios and shop online for an amazing variety of art works. The fair benefits both the artists and the ongoing work of peace.” www.peaceworkskc.org
Claire Schaeffer-Duffy of Worcester, MA shares, “US Rep. Jim McGovern (D) was among the 27 people who showed up for our standout calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons. Worcester was one of 20 cities and towns in MA that participated in Cries from Every Corner: Fund Healthcare, Housing and Jobs - Eliminate Nuclear Weapons. Similar standouts were held in Chicago, cities in New York, Iowa, and the West Coast. September 26 is the. UN International Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. In the above photos Rep. McGovern is wearing. the black mask with the words, ‘Good Trouble.’”
Cathy Schwinden of Fargo, ND describes, “Ten classrooms of children, K - Grade 5, learned about or reviewed information about our Peace Pole, one of the first in North Dakota. We then walked to our Pole, practiced saying "May peace prevail on earth" in 4 languages, and talked about how to be a peacemaker at home and at school. We concluded with a prayer.”
Twin Cities Nonviolent has been up busy this year. Check out their YouTube channel for recordings.
Jan Frase of Eau-Claire, WI reports, “This program, hosted by the Community Coalition for Non-violence and live-streamed by the Pablo Center for the Arts, covers issues of violence, racial/ BIPOC bias, and a moving, original song (Un Clamor en la Noche) about children separated from their parents while being held at the border. Kavon Cortez-Jones' spoken "Love Letter to Milwaukee" creates a mosaic of the beauty, tragedy, and diversity that are found in our big cities. Milwaukee has been named our "most segregated city". Please feel free to use this video for any JONAH TASK FORCE or program. If ever there was a time to come together in peace and nonviolence, it is now! Please help the Community Coalition for Non-violence spread the message.”
From Morro Bay, CA: “This is the last in our series of videos for Peace Week 2020. Here Ruth Ann Angus speaks about Great People of Peace highlighting two, longtime peace activist Philip Berrigan and originator of the #MeToo movement Tarana Burke. We hope you have enjoyed the videos and that they have spoken to your heart. Yes We Can Peacebuilders will offer a monthly Great People of Peace video from now on.
Today we begin again our efforts to aid the homeless in our community and we are asking you for help. Last year we provided a variety of items such as warm sleeping bags, socks, gloves, lanterns and beverage containers with a donation from Thrivent. We continued in spring of this year with a private donation of funds allowing us to sponsor free lunches on weekends for a child through the Estero Bay Kindness Coalition. With some donated funds we have received through this Peace Week video series we are launching another project: Socks for the Season!
While the weather is pleasant now, soon it will be cold and rainy. Socks are one of the clothing items most needed by homeless people. Our donated money will get us started slowly but more is needed. As we enter the Season of Peace we are hoping you can help us by sending a donation that will allow us to buy socks in bulk, and hopefully some other items. You can do this by making out a check to: E.B.U.M.C. Peacebuilders and sending it to Yes We Can Peacebuilders c/o Ruth Ann Angus at 703 Anchor Street, Morro Bay, CA 93442. We hope you can help us and thank you in advance for your generosity.”
