Everyone (and every body) is welcome in this participatory exploration of yoga and nonviolence. Yoga has a deep and long-lasting connection to nonviolence. (Gandhi even thought Hatha Yoga would be the ideal physical training for the satyagrahi.) Yoga philosophy has been used for thousands of years to address human health and behavior in order to (re)establish our natural state of harmony and well-being. This 3-part course will look at this historic link and how we can embody it in today's times. We will learn about principles such as AHIMSA (nonviolence) and SATYA (truthfulness) and how we can "be the change" from the inside out. Each class will have a physical and philosophical component. This course is designed for people with varied abilities and familiarity with yoga. You will learn easy-to-do postures and breathing exercises that will support your nonviolence practice throughout your life. (You do not have to be a "yoga person" to enjoy these sessions.)
In this workshop we will:
Understand the definition of Yoga, its connection to nonviolence, and how it supports each individual in personal growth and betterment, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually;
Explore some definitions of violence and its types/aspects in preparation to a better understanding of what nonviolence entails;
Learn how Yoga has a message to address violence on oneself and on society through principles such as AHIMSA (nonviolence) and SATYA (truthfulness);
Practice gentle physical postures and breathing exercises for cultivating self-awareness and self-regulation in one's daily life;
Have some time for questions/discussion.
Please wear comfortable clothes and have space to move. Bring an open mind and willing heart!
