Make an Impact: Labor Strike Solidarity & Mutual Aid

Labor strikes have surged by 280% in 2023, with workers demanding fair wages, union rights, better hiring practices, and workplace protections. Throughout history, labor movements have achieved substantial reforms, such as the 8-hour workday and workplace safety measures, through solidarity and mutual aid, demonstrating the power of collective action.

We invite you to stand with us and make a tangible impact through Mutual Aid & Labor Strike Solidarity during the upcoming Campaign Nonviolence Action Days, taking place between September 21st and October 2nd.

There are many ways to support workers as they use strikes, walkouts, and other labor actions to push for justice in the workplace.

Options for strike solidarity actions include:

  • Donate to a strike fund.

  • Join a picket line, march, or protest.

  • Post your support for striking workers on social media.

  • Invite a labor group to offer a workers’ rights training at your faith center.

  • Reach out to local unions, or local groups of nationwide unions like Starbucks Workers United, Amazon Labor Union, and United For Respect (Walmart).

  • Support the UAW’s push to unionize auto plants in the Southern United States.

Labor struggles have long been supported by another kind of solidarity: mutual aid.  What is that? It’s where we take care of one another as we rise up for change!

Since the pandemic, mutual aid networks have also been used by everyday people resisting poverty and economic hardship. Gandhi called poverty, “the worst form of violence” and mutual aid provides a powerful tool in moving toward a culture of active nonviolence.

Imagine a community where helping hands replace the weight of poverty, and where each gesture of kindness creates a ripple effect of change. Mutual aid isn't just about providing material support; it's about building connections and providing hope. Whether it's offering a warm meal, a safe haven, or lending an empathetic ear, your actions can make a world of difference.

Together, we can rewrite the story of poverty and transform lives for the better.

Options for mutual aid actions include:

  • Ask people to contribute to your local mutual aid fund.

  • Support the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network.

  • Distribute food to your community.

  • Restock a Little Free Pantry or Fridge.

  • Organize a tool share or a toy swap.

  • Share food with Food Not Bombs.

  • Coordinate a Neighborhood Potluck in a local park.

  • Participate (or instigate) a Pay-it-Forward action.

  • Take a photo of your action and send it to public officials to call for living wages.

Your innovative ideas are also welcome! No act is too small; each one contributes to change. Please take a moment to fill out the brief form here to get involved.
