Nonviolent Opelika Holds “Stop the Violence Day”
Nonviolent Opelika, Alabama, recently held a series of events aimed at ending gun violence and other forms of violence. On June 2-4, 2023, Pastor Carolyn Morton and the Samford Community Outreach Group wore orange shirts and recognized national gun violence victims.
They also held their 13th Annual Opelika Youth Fun And Fellowship Day in conjunction with their first Community Outreach Stop the Violence Day. In addition to positive, life-affirming activities for youth (like go-cart rides), they also held a rally and march against gun violence and mass shootings. They even received a proclamation from the Opelika Mayor decreeing that the second Saturday in June will be an annual day set aside for the Awareness of Violence In Alabama. Transform Alabama was a partner group in hosting this event.
Pastor Carolyn Morton is the coordinator for Nonviolent Opelika, part of the nationwide Nonviolent Cities Project, a network of groups working to advance nonviolent solutions and actions in cities, towns, and neighborhoods across the United States.
