Podcast & Videos From Changemakers—Youth Grantees Lift Their Voices!
Listen to the voices of young changemakers who are using podcasts and videos to speak about social change, nonviolence, racial justice, and educational equality. Abigail Asare and Savanna Holden are part of the Changemaker Youth Grants Program. Launched this year, these grants offer financial and skills-based support to youth-led creative projects to address violence and advance nonviolence.
Abigail Asare, a sophomore in high school, has released her first podcast episode on educational equity and racial justice. Gathering three friends and special guests (Janay, Kalisha, and Alexus), she turned on the mics and opened up a powerful 40-min conversation. It ranges from personal experiences of racist violent threats to micro-aggressions to system injustices faced by BIPOC students at mostly-white schools. It also includes moments of humor and practical suggestions—like implementing a multicultural US history curriculum that emphasizes diverse strands of history and excellence. Listen to The Path to Educational Equality here.
Savanna Holden crafted fourteen short videos on the power of nonviolence. Using quotes, stories, history, and meditations, she introduces many aspects of the field. From Cesar Chavez and militant nonviolence to Dr. King’s Six Steps of Nonviolence, you will encounter the pragmatic and principled angles. Savanna covers nonviolence toward self, others, and the whole world through movements for change. Find all of the videos in the Spreading Light Nonviolence series here.
These are two of the nine impressive projects happening nationwide, and in one case, across the world. Other efforts involve a giant mural, a climate art showcase, co-creative protest art with other youth, a gun violence PSA, and more. Meet all the Changemakers and learn about their projects here.
We also encourage you all to join us for the celebration of these young Changemakers. On Saturday, June 25th, we’ll gather virtually to see photos, videos, and hear stories from behind the scenes. This event is open to the public and we hope many of you will turn out to support the next generation of nonviolent activists! Register for this FREE event here.
