Action Week Healing with MK Gandhi Institute
Christina Krewson of the MK Gandhi Institute of Nonviolence shares the details of their Action Week activities.
Our Lunch & Learn was led by our wonderful community trainers, Bianca and Jonathon. The learning hour focused on the difference between non-violence and nonviolence, using the example of Autherine Lucy, some illustrated infographics, and MLK's speech: “When Peace Becomes Obnoxious.” There were 6 participants who joined us, some from outside of Rochester. The Nonviolence Now campaign was viewed by many folks on Instagram and Facebook; three participants received their fannypacks with Gandhi Institute swag, and sent us thank you notes and pictures! We were able to use some of our prompts ("How do you keep your cool?") at tabling events, and young community members filled out answers with their parents.
Our Nonviolence Now gave media users an immediate tool to interrupt online negativity and harassment and instead promote peace. The users shared positive posts among their communities, and some of our partners reposted out prompts, expanding this nonviolence message to college campuses, community center members, workplaces, etc. The virtual lunch & learn equipped 6 people with Kingian nonviolence principles that they can then share in their communities.
