Day of Action to End Gun Violence: Friday, September 30

One of the Campaign Nonviolence Days of Action 2022

Gun violence is an epidemic in our communities. On this day, wear orange and hold actions to end gun violence, including marches and walks in neighborhoods, student walkouts or vigils around school shootings, teach-ins on violence de-escalation and conflict skills, art therapy and creative projects with youth and families, and more. Learn about these solutions and use this database from Everytown For Gun Safety to find out what your state is working on and connect those demands to your actions. You can also check out the resources offered by Sandy Hook Promise, and learn about some of the educational outreach they do in schools. Co-organized with Jared’s Heart of Success.

Groups To Reach Out To:

Tactics to Try:

If you’re thinking of holding a vigil, consider an artistic vigillamentation or public mourningdisplay of portraits, or use of symbolic lights. You could also stage a die-in, hold a walk-out, or make space for survivors of gun violence to share their stories with decision makers.

#WearOrange - wearing orange shirts or bandanas is a growing symbol of the anti-gun violence movement. At work or school, organize coworkers and students to wear orange on Sept 30th. Learn more about this effort here.

Play When I Was 10a poetic animation addressing the epidemic of mass shootings at schools, created by Pace e Bene/Campaign Nonviolence’s Art & Media Coordinator, Rosie Davila.

Ask people you encounter throughout this day to go to Everytown For Gun Safety’s website and take action on at least one way we can help end gun violence.

Work with groups like Cure Violence, Nonviolent Peaceforce, Meta Peace Teams, and DC Peace Teams to set up a Violence Intervention Program. Some of these efforts have led to a 65% (or more reduction) in incidents of gun violence. You can also coordinate this with previous actions on Tues, Sept 27th for Alternative Community Safety & Ending Militarized Policing.

Pro-Tips

Ask your group: what emotional message do we want to uplift? Grief, outrage, love and loss, all of the above? Make space for this message to be heard by participants and decision makers on this issue.

Take photos, record participant stories and comments to share in press releases and social posts.

Ask a community member to write an op-ed for local news outlets about the event.

Use hashtags to connect on social media. #EndGunViolence #WearOrange #NoGuns #GunLawsSaveLives

Use hashtag #CNV2022 so we can find and uplift your posts.

Thank you!
