My Pace e Bene Story
I first heard about Pace e Bene through Soulforce (an organization following the methods of Gandhi and King to protest unjust treatment of folks in the GLBTQ community). My contact brought news of the first Pace e Bene GLBTQ From Violence to Wholeness workshop at Holy Redeemer Center in November of 2001. I attended and was impressed by the quality of the exercises and readings. This was my first meeting with Laura Slattery and I liked working with her from the start.
Since I travel by public transportation and there was none to Holy Redeemer Center, I seldom volunteered until the office on Harrison Street was opened. One exception was a fundraising dance held in the “downtown” section of Oakland. I got there early and enjoyed helping Joi Morton-Wiley make lots of tuna sandwiches to keep the dancers nourished while they earned the marathon points people had committed to them for dancing the evening away. The points would be converted to money at the conclusion of the evening. Laura is still the person I work with most frequently. Office work includes data entry and extends to typing essays that may be included in the soon to be published General Audience version of From Violence to Wholeness.

At home I volunteer by creating fliers for the yearly workshops. My favorite project has been to make Pace e Bene editions of three of my best card designs. These are sold at workshops and conferences. They can also by purchased directly from me. Please see the ad on the nearby page.
The best thing about Pace e Bene is that the staff treats their volunteers as “full Citizens” rather than extensions of the computers for hour after hour of data entry.
A poem from Maggie Cockrell:
I’m growing daily, reaching out.My life has opened as a flower:Fragrant, delightful to behold,So soft to touch — yet sturdy—Life flows through its veinsA witness to my god
