To End the US War in Iraq

March 7

Washington, DC

Now is the Time:

Religious Communities to Call on Congressional Leadership

To Take Bold and Courageous Steps for Peace

On Friday, March 7 people of faith from across the United States will pray for peace at the US Capitol — and call on Congress to take courageous, concrete steps NOW to end the US war in Iraq. Please join members of the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities in this call for peace organized by The Olive Branch Interfaith Peace Partners.

In March our nation will mark five full years of war in Iraq. As many as one million Iraqis have died. 3,966 US soldiers have been killed. Hundreds of billions of dollars in new war funding has been approved. And Defense Department planners are envisioning a long-term war and occupation.

NOW is the time for peacemaking. NOW is the time to set our nation on a new course. As people of faith, we are moved by the vision of peace and justice embedded in our many religious traditions to call on Congress and its leadership NOW to take dramatic and fearless action to end the war. Together we will call on Congress NOW to:

  • End the U.S. occupation of Iraq (immediately begin an orderly withdrawal of U.S. troops and closure of bases with a timetable supported by the Iraqi people);
  • Resist war against Iran;
  • Support our troops;
  • Support an Iraqi-led peace process;
  • NO to torture; and
  • YES to justice.

On March 7, we will TAKE ACTION NOW by praying in houses of worship across Capitol Hill; gathering for an interfaith convocation in the shadow of the Capitol; and bringing our call for peace to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

We will pray and engage in nonviolent witness outside their Congressional buildings. Some of us will be led by conscience to dramatize the call for concrete steps for peace by engaging in prayerful nonviolent civil disobedience at these sites. This interfaith event builds on last year’s Christian Peace Witness for Iraq, in which 3,500 people took part in an ecumenical service at the National Cathedral and then processed to the White House, where 222 ministers and laity were arrested as they prayed for peace on the sidewalk in front of the executive mansion.
