San Francisco — Bicyclists will share the Valentine’s spirit with Muni bus drivers this Tuesday, February 14th, delivering handmade Valentine’s cards to nearly 200 drivers.
“Valentine’s Day is a great time to let Muni drivers know that bicyclists appreciate them and the important service they provide on our city streets,” says Leah Shahum, Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC), a 5,300-member nonprofit group promoting bicycling for everyday transportation. “The growing population of bike commuters in San Francisco has a lot to gain from thoughtful, safe Muni drivers. We want to encourage appreciation and cooperation and understanding as possible between these road users.”
Dozens of SFBC volunteers made the Valentine’s cards with personalized messages including: “Thanks for sharing the road,” and “Bicyclists Love Muni”, and “Thanks for easing congestion on our roads.”
The Valentine’s cards will be delivered Tuesday morning by volunteers to individual drivers on buses, as well as to groups of drivers at major Muni depot stations.
“Neither bus drivers nor bicyclists really get the kind of praise and respect that they deserve in San Francisco for helping to ease congestion and air pollution and for making our streets safer and more livable,” says Leah Shahum, of the SFBC. “This is a fun way to say ‘thank you’ and ‘you’re appreciated’.”
