“The world will change because of your smile… to sit, to smile, to look at things and really see them”
Religion can fuel violence and nonviolence. There is a long history of religious belief provoking and deepening conflict. At the same time, many religious traditions offer both a vision and tools for peace, justice and conflict resolution.
Over the past century, Engaged Spiritualities for nonviolent social change have begun to emerge in many religious traditions. These “lived expressions and experiences of faith” are tapping and transforming ancient spiritual truths and pathways to respond to the titanic challenges facing the planet and its inhabitants today. These “Spiritualities of Engagement” have begun to emerge in Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with any of them inspired by or resonant with the “Engaged Hinduism” of Gandhi. There is also a growing Interfaith Engaged Spirituality.
