A couple of weeks ago a long-time friend of mine at Global Exchange, Ted Lewis, called. He wanted to know if I would be willing to lead a nonviolence training for people preparing to risk arrest in Washington, DC. Over the past two decades, I have led many nonviolent action trainings for people taking action in Washington. What Ted talked about was something I hadn’t done before — lead this workshop on a train! As he described the idea, the more excited I got.
The Capitol Climate Action coalition is organizing a mass civil disobedience action at a coal-fired power plant that services the US Capitol. The action intends to dramatize both the need to shift from environmentally disastrous forms of energy to renewable and sustainable ones. It also seeks to highlight the symbolism of the literal dependence the government has on coal and its lobby in this country.
The organizers are asking people to get to Washington on more environmentally friendly transpotation than planes or cars. Hence the “Training on the Train.” Some participants will be converging from across the US in Chicago and take Amtrak to the nation’s capitol together.
