Richard Rohr, Emerging Church & why the Church silenced Jesus for the State

Richard Rohr has kindly said,

Amazing that we should need to tell Christians that Jesus taught and surely lived a non violent life! And almost as amazing —and wonderful— that a young Christian like Jarrod McKenna [and the rest of the EPYC team] should be able to teach it so well in our time and culture!”

I know putting the quote in I risk shameless self promotion but it’s also a reflection of the EPYC team I work with, Thomas Day, Emma Palandri, Ofa Benness and all our Peace Tree Community. And it’s also reflection on Richard’s integrity, leadership and generosity that when I was just some punk kid in need of a haircut (ok, given, not all that much has changed) Richard publicly supported our work in “empowering a generation of ecoprophets in the transformative nonviolence of Christ” when many wouldn’t touch us. (Thanks Richard!!!)

Here’s a great short clip leading into the “Emerging Church: conversations, convergence and action” conference that the Centre for Action and Contemplation  are putting on. Richard talks about why the church silenced Jesus for the State and why Christianity so often looks nothing like the nonviolent Jesus Christ. Well worth the 5 minutes to watch. And my good friend, who I think is one of Australia’s shinning stars of gospel nonviolence, Simon Moyle has recommended this clip about Richard talking about the Emerging Church.

Enjoy!

P.S.

look out for Simon’s editorial in the Australian tomorrow. No doubt it will be brill.
