There are more than rumbles of a new nonviolent movement amidst my generation and it’s coming from what many think is an unlikely place… charismatic/pentecostal/evangelical Christianity!
Recently I’ve been asked to preach in some of Australia’s largest churches and this weekend I’m the keynote with Dan Lian at Ignite.
While often hijacked by the Empire to play “spiritual chaplain” to it’s dirty work, it seems the Holy Spirit’s is stirring a new generation radicalized by Christ’s love to live out a spirituality that doesn’t reflect the Empires of the World by God’s nonviolent Kingdom. Zack Exley writing about Shane Claiborne and Rob Bell in the US speaks to our expereince in Australia;
“Bell and Claiborne are two of the better-known young voices of a broad, explicitly nonviolent, anti-imperialist and anticapitalist theology that is surging at the heart of white, suburban Evangelical Christianity… Looking further, I found a movement whose book sales tower over their secular progressive counterparts in Amazon rankings; whose sermon podcasts reach thousands of listeners each week; and whose messages, in one form or another, reach millions of churchgoers. Bell alone preaches to more than 10,000 people every Sunday, with more than 50,000 listening in online.
Hope to see ya there.
