“… As is always the case with empires and powers, both sides claimed God on their side. It had been thought it would be a short war, and that the troops would be home by Christmas—-but here they were huddled in their trenches, deep ditches dug in the now frozen French countryside. […] So in the ditches were arrayed the Allies of the French and English on one side, and the friends of the Germans on the other. And between the trenches lay No Man’s Land across which hours earlier the troops had sighted their enemy with the beads of their rifles. The dusk of Christmas Eve fell….”
